Can blockchain improve the Internet security?

The modern Internet is a network of controlled sites. It is made vulnerable and dangerous by centralization and outdated protocols. The solution is complete decentralization and switching to the blockchain. How to create a decentralized Internet and why it will be safer than the existing one?

Today’s “independent” Internet

It used to be believed that no one controls the Internet. But in reality, a modern global network is a large network of controlled sites.

Of course, big companies like Yandex, Facebook and Google do a lot for data security. But, unfortunately, this does not solve the problem, because it does not make real changes to the system.

Online, everything is in the form of data. The fact is that we rarely think about who owns them, how they are stored and what happens to them when we share them. Most often, such facts rise to the surface in the process of scandals involving the leakage or theft of personal information.

But the problem is not even that the data is transferred to employers and thus monetized. The problem is in their storage. Now they are on the central servers. And, if desired, they may well become prey to hackers or… states.

So personal data do not belong to users once they enter the network. The situation is going to get worse because of the Internet of Things (IoT) rapid development, whose elements will become a part of all areas of our life.

This may be the main problem of the 21st century.

Something about decentralized network

The decentralized network is the functioning of websites, applications, social networks without the participation of a third party.

To create an independent network, the intermediaries (company servers and protocols) need to be removed. Then we need to transfer data and functions and distribute functions between participants. The servers will still store information.

Decentralized applications and a peer-to-peer network that will monitor traffic will help achieve this goal.

Recently, serious leakages and personal data theft take place more and more often. Because of these situations, Google has recently announced shuttering of its social network.

A decentralized network will solve these problems: participants will determine themselves who and how can get access to their personal data.

For this, it may be needed to rewrite the Internet infrastructure from scratch.

How to create decentralized Internet?

The existing Internet protocols were developed over 40 years ago. Their vulnerability allows to commit cyber attacks aimed not only at people but also at the denial of service. So the first step in decentralization is the correction of these protocols.

The solution is to use the DID blockchain system for the entire Internet. It provides each participant with a decentralized identifier, which by default checks for ownership and does not allow anyone without property rights to access the data.

In combination with the new infrastructure, the blockchain technology can provide absolute trust to the entire Internet.

To decentralize data storage, a system that acts as a p2p logistic center is required. Each user will be able to have their own virtual disk or personal cloud computer, where it is possible to place all the encrypted data.

Using a reliable blockchain-based identification system, the network will be able to extract the necessary information, put it together into a “digital capsule” and send to its destination without an intermediary. When data comes to the recipient’s virtual disk, the identifier is checked, and the packet can be opened.

After the implementation of these two systems, a new era of the Internet not only as a technology but also as a cultural phenomenon will come.
